Position Summary:

The Centers for Diseases Control (CDC) General Clerk 2 / Driver is responsible for a wide variety of services related to incoming and outgoing mail. Provides receipt and screening of all incoming USPS, UPS, and FedEx mail. Security scanning, screening, and sorting of all incoming, interoffice interagency, e-certified, metered, registered, and foreign mail, which is then delivered to designated locations. The General Clerk II/Driver follows clearly detailed procedures in performing repetitive tasks in the same sequence. Ability to drive to local CDC campuses. All candidates must pass PIV Clearance and clean MVR.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Screening all incoming and interoffice mail
  • X-ray all incoming packages and boxes with the X-ray machine.
  • Receiving incoming mail from the CDC Mail Screening Facility
  • Sorting and Date Stamping all incoming USPS, FedEx and UPS mail.
  • Operate government and/or company vehicles. Delivery and pickup interoffice mail per agreement with CDC.
  • Maintain route and vehicle fuel log sheets for daily deliveries
  • Operate Handheld Scanners at all delivery locations.
  • Metering outgoing mail
  • Presenting outgoing mail to USPS
  • Provide special on campus hand carry of packages upon request
  • Separates outgoing mail into: (1) United States Postal Service (USPS), or United Parcel Service (UPS) which needs metering; (2) internal or interoffice mail according to designated mailstops;(3) international mail; (4) Federal Express.
  • Re-address undeliverable mail bearing incomplete or incorrect addresses
  • Basic computer skills for email and address/directory lookup
  • Must meet established standards of quality and productivity with/without supervision
  • Must maintain a good attendance record
  • Perform other related tasks and duties as assigned by the Mailroom Project Manager and Supervisor
  • Cross train with Program Support Service’ Regional Office at the Sam Nunn Building / MLK Building.


  • Six months experience in a mailroom or inventory control setting helpful, but not required
  • Must maintain driver’s license and clean MVR
  • Ability to lift to a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to satisfy security requirements for the CDC
  • Basic computer skills


  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent knowledge and experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Have full range of mobility in upper and lower body.
  • Be able to reach overhead.
  • Be able to work in various positions, including, but not limited to, stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling, and squatting for extended periods of time.
  • Be able to handle, lift, pull and push materials and equipment to complete assigned job tasks.
  • Be able to handle mailbags, mail hampers, and packages often weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Good hand dexterity. Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble small objects.
  • Good eyesight.

Visual Effort:

  • Well-lit office environment requiring average amount of visual effort.
  • Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet).


  • Follows all prescribed safety regulations to diminish accidents.
  • Understanding of OSHA safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of evacuation procedures and the whereabouts of exits and fire extinguishers.
  • Immediately report circumstances you consider may present a hazard to yourself and others.
  • Report any accident whether minor or major.


  • Must abide by all security regulations of the facility.
  • Must obtain and wear a photo ID.
